Welcome to Indiana’s Amish Country, home to the second largest Amish settlement in the world, located in Elkhart, Lagrange, Noble, Kosciusko, Marshal and St. Joseph Counties. Indiana also has a fairly large settlement in Adams, Allen and Jay Counties along with another 9 to 10 smaller settlements scattered throughout the state. Parke County, best known for it’s covered bridges, is home to a small settlement that migrated from Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania, where they maintain the gray Lancaster buggy. With the exception of the Adams, Allen and Jay County settlement where they do not use top buggies, black buggies are the norm for Indiana. Homesteads in the larger settlements, originally settled by Amish families in the early 1800’s, are still maintained by the descendants of those early settlers in much the same way their forefathers did with large areas of farm land still unencumbered by modern technology. Neatly kept farms which have been maintained for many generations, are situated on the fertile farmlands. With their large wood framed houses, big red or white barns, flower and vegetable gardens, fields for pasture or producing grain, they make this one of the more scenic areas in Indiana.
